Ch 25: Another Message from Mr. Put

Cloe dashed back to her room, her mind a whirl of thoughts. She took out the radio and tuned to the designated frequency, heart pounding. The usual static filled the air before a string of gibberish filtered through the speakers. As quickly as she could, she wrote the jumbled words down on a piece of paper and, with practiced precision, used the one-time pad to decipher the message.

Her fingers flew over the paper as she unraveled the code. With each repetition of the task, she had grown faster, more adept at decoding the messages. This time, the words that emerged from the seemingly random gibberish were short and to the point:

“Send Shree and Daniel to Queen.”

Cloe’s heart skipped a beat. How did Mr. Put know about the call from Agent Charlie? More importantly, what did he mean by sending Shree and Daniel to the Queen? Was he asking her to send Shree on a mission to London? It didn’t feel right—Shree was only 19, and while she was a quick learner, this was a mission that could prove perilous. Cloe cared deeply for her, and the thought of putting her in danger weighed heavily on her mind.

But Cloe had learned to trust Mr. Put’s judgment. After all, it was Mr. Put who had promised Shree the hope of finding her brother. He had placed his faith in Cloe, and now she had to place her faith in him. He knew more than anyone else—he always had. But that didn’t make this decision any easier.

As she mulled over the implications, there was a knock at her door. Startled, she opened it to find Daniel standing there, holding tickets for London.

Before Cloe could speak, her phone rang. It was Shree.

“I’ve just received my tickets for London,” Shree said, her voice a mixture of excitement and nervousness. “And an appointment letter for an internship!”

Cloe smiled but quickly shifted into business mode. “Shree, listen to me carefully. There’s a serious situation in Britain—there’s a threat to the monarchy. They need your help, and I need you to go to London. Your expertise from the Uday Palace case has made you the perfect candidate. You’ll be working with British special forces, and Daniel will be accompanying you. It’s a high-stakes mission, but I believe you can handle it.”

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. When Shree finally spoke, her voice was steady, but there was a hint of excitement mixed with anxiety.

“I’m ready,” she said. “This might take me closer to Dev... who knows, maybe I’ll even meet him! But…” she hesitated, “this will be my first time on a plane. And my first time leaving India.”

Cloe and Daniel exchanged a brief, amused glance. They had been worried about Shree being thrown into a serious mission at such a young age, but her concerns were entirely different.

“Millennials,” Daniel muttered, shaking his head.

“I know, right?” Cloe chuckled. “I was worried about you handling the danger, and you’re worried about your first flight!”

The two of them shared a moment of lightheartedness before the reality of the situation returned. Shree was about to embark on a mission that would change everything, and Cloe couldn’t help but feel a knot of worry in her stomach. But she also trusted Shree’s abilities and the judgment of Mr. Put.

There was no turning back now. The investigation into the British monarchy’s threat would soon unfold, and Cloe had to ensure that everyone was prepared.
